The 2026 Buick Envision vs. the Competition

2026 Buick Envision vs the Competition

Buick occupies a unique space in the automotive landscape: while not a true luxury brand per se, it offers much of the refinement and premium amenities associated with upmarket crossovers and SUVs, albeit at a much more accessible price point. That’s what helps the 2026 Envision stand out from its competitors in the extremely crowded compact crossover segment.

Envision, like many of its rivals, is powered by a turbocharged engine – in this case, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft on tap – but includes a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive (AWD) as standard equipment. While perhaps not quite as powerful as some true luxury rivals, that’s plenty of pep for daily tasks, performs in a quiet, refined manner – as a Buick should.

With its unique premium brand position, the Envision’s competitors come mostly from luxury brands, where competing models either cost more or are smaller.

2026 Buick Envision vs Acura RDX

Acura is probably the closest brand approximation to Buick – it doesn’t quite have the cachet of a true luxury establishment, but offers uplevel styling, appointments, and features compared to a comparable Honda. Now in its third generation, Acura’s compact RDX attempts to merge the sporty and refined personalities of its forebears into as well-rounded a package as possible. Power comes from a 272-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder, which is mated to a ten-speed automatic and a trick torque-vectoring AWD system. 2026 is the final year for this iteration of the RDX, although a fourth-generation model has been promised, likely debuting in 2028 or later.

Acura doesn’t name its trim levels but instead defines them by packages. In ascending order, they are the Technology, A-spec, Advance, and then A-Spec Advance packages.

  • With a starting MSRP of $41,000, the Envision is about $4,000 less than the $45,100 starting MSRP of the RDX. That makes the Envision Sport Touring a more price-compatible model to the base RDX.
  • The Envision has slightly better EPA-estimated city/highway/combined fuel economy ratings than the RDX (22/28/25 vs. 21/27/23).
  • The Envision may deliver lower operating costs as its engine is designed to operate on less expensive 87 octane (Regular) gasoline, whereas the RDX recommends more expensive 91 octane (Premium) gasoline.
  • Both models have the same 1500-lb. maximum towing capacity rating.
  • The RDX features analog gauges for the driver and a 10-inch center touchscreen. The Envision elegantly combines a digital driver display and the center touchscreen in a single, seamless 30-inch housing.
  • The RDX requires you to use the console control knob to control its audio, navigation, and other interfaces while in motion instead of just quickly tapping a touchscreen.  You can use the Envision touchscreen at any time.
  • The Envision provides almost an extra inch and a half of rear legroom (39.3 vs. 38.0).
  • Features on the Envision Sport Touring trim but not on the comparably-priced RDX include:
    • Leather seating
    • Surround view camera
    • Premium audio system (Bose)
    • On-board navigation system
    • Wireless phone charging
    • Head-up display
    • Remote engine start
    • Parking sensors
  • In the 2026 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS), Buick ranks near the top of the industry average for quality and dependability, whereas Acura ranks below average, with a higher frequency of reported problems per 100 vehicles.
  • In the 2026 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study, Buick ranked second overall in tracking the dependability of 3-year-old models, near the top of the industry for quality and dependability, with 160 problems per 100 vehicles, whereas Acura was well below the industry average.

2026 Buick Envision vs Lexus NX

Lexus’ smallest NX shares its platform with the Toyota RAV4,  but did not receive the 2026 redesign (and subsequent physical growth) of its Toyota cousin. As a result, even though it is more expensive (starting MSRP: $47,220) than the Envision, it is considered a size category down, as evidenced by a cozier cabin. On the other hand, it is among the most powerful models in this segment, with its 240-liter turbocharged inline-4 producing 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. It is available with a hybrid drivetrain ($46,570), based on a non-turbocharged 2.5-liter engine producing 240 hp, and a plug-in hybrid ($59,505) producing 304 horsepower and 37 EV miles. Interestingly, the Hybrid is available with both FWD and AWD, while the non-hybrid has standard AWD.

  • The Envision’s starting MSRP is over $6,000 lower than the starting price for the least expensive Lexus NX available.
  • While it won’t compete with the hybrid models, the Envision has slightly better EPA-estimated MPG ratings than the conventional NX (22/28/25 vs. 21/28/24).
  • The Envision incurs lower operating costs because it recommends 87 octane (Regular), whereas the NX requires more expensive 91 octane gasoline.
  • The Envision also has a larger gas tank (16.1 vs. 14.5 gal.), giving it a significantly higher range (est. 403 vs. 348 miles).
  • The NX has a 9.8-inch center touchscreen, while the Envision’s infotainment touchscreen is half of its 30-inch combined display.
  • The Envision has a longer wheelbase (109.0 vs. 105.9 inches), which helps provide greater interior space and an improved ride quality.
  • The Envision has more overall passenger space than the NX (100.4 vs. 90.4 cubic feet).  This is reflected specifically in more:
    • Front headroom: 39.6 vs. 38.3 inches
    • Rear legroom: 39.3 vs. 36.1 inches
    • Rear shoulder room: 55.9 vs. 54.0 inches
  • The Envision also has more cargo room than the NX, with the rear seats up (25.2 vs. 22.7 cubic feet) and with the rear seatbacks folded (52.7 vs. 46.9 cubic feet).
  • The Envision received an overall 5-star rating from the NHTSA, while the NX has not been tested.
Features of the Envision Sport Touring trim compared to the more expensive base NX include:

    • Surround View Camera
    • Leather seating
    • Premium Audio system (Bose)
    • Two-setting driver position memory
    • Ambient lighting
    • Wireless phone charging

2026 Buick Envision vs Audi Q3

The Audi Q3 was first introduced in the 2012 model year and is currently the smallest model in the Audi lineup in the U.S. The current model is in its third design generation, which was launched for the 2026 model year. Like many in this class, it is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 that produces 255 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. Power is routed through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and sent to all four wheels via the Quattro AWD system. The Q3 shares its platform with the VW Tiguan but is smaller overall, placing it one size-segment below the Envision in the subcompact category.

  • Though larger, the Envision has a lower starting MSRP than the $43,700 Q3.
  • The Q3’s 7-speed dual-clutch shifts very quickly during high-performance driving but can lack smoothness from a standstill and at low speeds.
  • The Envision’s 109-inch wheelbase provides a smoother highway ride than the Q3’s 105.6-inch wheelbase.
  • The Envision has a larger cabin than the Q3, as reflected in the following metrics:
    • Front headroom: 39.6 vs. 38.1 inches
    • Rear headroom: 38.9 vs. 37.6 inches
    • Rear legroom: 39.3 vs. 36.1 inches
    • Rear shoulder room: 55.9 vs. 55.1 inches
  • The models trade off cargo space advantages, with the Q3 having an edge when the rear seats are up (25.2 vs. 29.0 cubic feet), while the Envision has more maximum cargo space (52.7 vs. 50 cubic feet).
  • Features found on the base Envision but not on the Q3 include:
    • Premium brand audio system (Bose)
    • Wireless phone charging
    • Ambient lighting
  • The Envision received an overall 5-star rating from the NHTSA. The Q2 has not been tested.
  • In the 2026 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS), Buick ranks well above the industry average for quality and dependability, whereas Audi ranks significantly below average, with a higher rate of reported problems per 100 vehicles.
  • In the 2026 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study, Buick ranked second overall in tracking the dependability of 3-year-old models, whereas Audi ranked fifth from the bottom.
