Buick’s most affordable model is a high-value study in contradictions. With a starting MSRP of $24,700, it is clearly affordable yet presents as an upscale model in nearly every way. It is compact, yet offers the rear legroom of a larger vehicle. It is also categorized as an SUV, but Envistas wear the sleek profile of a 4-door sport hatchback, along with the bold front styling that has become a Buick hallmark.
The Envista is powered by a turbocharged 1.2-liter inline-3 producing 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. That makes it moderately powerful while remaining quite comfortable and still providing the utility people desire. Other models have entered this segment, some promising affordability and all promising something more than basic economical transportation. Let’s see how they compare.

Once just another Japanese brand with a nice sports car, Mazda is striving to become an upscale brand, largely through attractive exterior and interior styling. This is perhaps most challenging for their CX-30 model, the smallest in the automaker’s lineup. The base engine is a non-turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-4, which is large for the segment. Top trim levels feature a turbocharged version of that engine, which is quite powerful for the category, though those models bump the price well out of the Envista price range. Like the Envista, the CX-30 uses a 6-speed automatic transmission. Unlike Envista, which is only offered with front-wheel drive, the CX-30 is only available with all-wheel drive. There are eight trim levels overall. With a starting MSRP of $26,375, the Mazda CX-30 base model is the most price comparable to the $26,200 Envista Sport Touring.

The ADX is Acura’s newest model. While its exterior design matches the Acura lineup, it doesn’t take much scrutiny to see that it’s based on the Honda HR-V. Like that model, the ADX is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with a continuously-variable transmission (CVT) that sends power to either the front wheels or all four, though it does not feature the more sophisticated torque-vectoring AWD system used in other Acura crossovers and SUVs.

The Taos is Volkswagen’s smallest SUV. It was introduced in the US as a 2021 model, effectively replacing the discontinued Golf model (GTI and R models excepted) as Volkswagen’s most affordable model, and it remains in its initial design generation. The model is unapologetically boxy, which increases its cargo space compared to the sleekly proportioned Envista. Power comes from a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 174 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. The power is managed by an 8-speed automatic transmission, which sends power to the front wheels or all four via the 4MOTION AWD system. Like the Envista, the Taos is not recommended for towing. The Taos is available in S, SE, SE Black, and SEL trim levels.

Volvo has also pushed its model range upmarket, which helps explain why, at $41,295, the XC40 has the highest entry-level price tag in this comparison. The XC40 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 in one of two available states of tune. One produces 194 horsepower and 221 lb-ft of torque, while the other bumps up to 247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Both have a mild hybrid component that assists with initial start-up and acceleration. Both are significantly more powerful than the Envista, though perhaps more than needed for vehicles of this size. The engines are paired with an 8-speed transmission, and FWD is standard while AWD is available. The XC40 is available in Core, Plus, and Ultra trims, with the latter reaching pricing in the mid-50s.
