Buick Claims Top Spot in the J.D. Power 2022 U.S. Initial Quality Study
During a year full of problems, Buick was able to stand out and earn the top spot for J.D. Power’s 2022 U.S. Initial Quality Study. With global shortages and massive supply chain issues, many automakers faced countless setbacks during production that led to less-than-stellar ratings appearing in almost four times as many vehicles are previous years. However, as a brand known for quality, Buick was able to come out ahead and earn top marks for 2022.

Facing Problems Head-On
Even in the face of mounting setbacks, Buick kept their eye set on achieving the highest standard for its vehicles. Along with difficulty obtaining parts and materials, the constant advancements in technology have made it hard for automakers to keep up while maintaining quality. The result is lower-performing alternatives that greatly impacted the customer experience. But where other manufacturers failed, Buick succeeded. With their dedication to the customer and high standards for materials, they pushed ahead without settling for less. Since Buick is known for its line of reliable vehicles, it’s no surprise that that holds true for this year’s lineup, demonstrating quality without compromise.
Attainable High-Quality
J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study measures nearly 85,000 customers’ satisfaction and problems experience during the first 90 days of ownership. The study measures issues (or lack thereof) in the following categories:
- Driver assistance
- Interior
- Powertrain
- Seats
- Driving experience
- Infotainment
- Features
- Controls and displays
- Exterior
With such a broad range of categories, it’s easy to see how many automakers fall short. But Buick remained strong in both continuing models and new. Many other makers experienced the most problems where tech was concerned, specifically the driver assistance and infotainment categories. Due to their rigorous testing standards, though, the Buick brand reigned supreme.

With the rise in popularity of small-sized SUVs, Buick’s Encore GX stood at the top. The small but mighty SUV offers more cargo room and interior space than its predecessor, the Encore, with a redesigned body and style. It’s a testament to Buick’s achievable luxury, starting at just $24,400 while still ranking at the top of every IQS category.
