BY 2024, BUICK AND GMC WILL BE 5G ENABLED

Buick and GMC were on the forefront of in-vehicle connectivity when the OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi connection was introduced in 2014. Today, more than 16 million General Motors customers in the U.S. and Canada – among them, our own here in the Metroplex – are using this as part of their OnStar connected services subscription. Owners of GM vehicles have used more than 171 million gigabytes of data across its brands, which is equivalent to nearly 5.7 billion hours of music streamed or more than 716 million hours of streaming video.

The next step is to expand this technology and adapt it to the newest level of connectivity – 5G or the fifth-generation cellular network.

Starting with the 2024 model year, OnStar will increase their connection to AT&T’s 5G network on select new Buick and GMC models.

Upgrading to 5G is now just to increase bandwidth between the vehicle and the available cellular network. With the addition of autonomous vehicle technology and the increase in electric mobility, have greater bandwidth will be beneficial to enable a GM vehicle to utilize these technologies through better connectivity to enable key functions to work seamlessly.

With the upgrade to 5G connectivity, enhancements to the network will include:

• IMPROVED ROADWAY-CENTRIC COVERAGE
• Faster music and video downloads with higher quality
• Faster, more reliable, and secure over-the-air software updates
• Faster navigation, mapping, and voice services

To support GM’s rapid innovation and delivery of next-generation connected vehicle solutions, AT&T and Microsoft are bringing together the speed and reliability of AT&T’s 5G network with Microsoft’s scalable and secure cloud services.

As a bonus, owners of 2019 and newer Buick and GMC vehicles with 4G LTE capabilities will experience faster connectivity speeds and many of the same performance benefits of future 5G-equipped vehicles. The upgrade will happen when the new network infrastructure becomes available to these vehicles.
