Compare GMC Sierra EV To Other Fully-Electric Full-Size Trucks

2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Side ViewIn recent years, electric cars have become one of the biggest talking points in society. One of the complaints about EVs in general for some people was that there weren’t any offerings that appealed to people who needed a truck bed, vast amounts of space inside the vehicle, and the genuine ability to tow trailers, boats, cars, and the like. Enter the GMC Sierra EV, a genuinely potent truck that can handle all of customers’ day-to-day needs while still ready to go for your weekend activities and hobbies.

Sierra EV Power And Capacities

The GMC Sierra EV will debut first with the top-line Denali Edition 1 trim level. GMC estimates that the Sierra will have at least 754 horsepower and 785 lb-ft of torque, 440 miles of range, the ability to tow up to 10,000 lbs when properly equipped, and a max payload of 1,450 lbs. When owners are in need of a charge, the Sierra EV is capable of charging at 350 kW through an 800 Volt DC Fast Charging station, which will give drivers 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. This brings the world of EVs ever closer to gas-powered vehicles.

Not A One Trick Pony

GMC has said that the Sierra EV will feature 4-wheel steering, allowing the truck to CrabWalk and maneuver better in all types of driving situations. With an air ride suspension system, the Sierra can be raised and lowered by up to 2 inches. The MultiPro MidGate is a welcomed innovative feature of the new truck. It gives a maximum loading length of almost 11 feet with the MidGate down and the MultiPro Tailgate’s load stop open. The bed in normal use is 5 feet 11 inches.

Pricing

Prospective buyers of the Sierra EV can order their truck at Ewing Buick GMC. The Denali Edition 1 will have a base price of $99,495, not including the $1,995 destination fee. However, in 2025, the AT4 and Elevation trim levels will be rolling onto dealer lots, reportedly costing quite a bit less. GMC has said that a base version of the Sierra EV will cost about $50,000.

Comparisons

With how amazing the Sierra EV sounds, how does it stack up against the ever-growing EV truck competition?

Sierra EV vs Tesla Cybertruck

The Cybertruck is the new “it” vehicle on the road, despite its controversies and many not-so-great stories. When you look at it objectively, the Tesla truck has a maximum range of only 340 miles in some configurations, with other trim levels getting 320 miles to a full charge. That is obviously below the 440 miles of the Sierra EV. A big reason buyers get trucks is that the big bed is able to haul things. The Cybertruck has an oddly shaped, unconventional bed, while the Sierra EV has a standard 5’11” bed that can be lengthened up to 11 feet. The Tesla doesn’t have the capability to do that.

Sierra EV vs Rivian R1T

Rivian’s R1T has some good features and is comparable to some electric vehicles, but when it comes to using it as an everyday truck, it falls short. The R1T’s bed is only 4.5 feet long, which is shorter than the 5-foot bed on the midsize GMC Canyon. The Rivian also has a good driving range from 270 to 420 miles, depending on the trim level. However, the Sierra EV, as mentioned before, has a total range of 440 miles and a bed that is nearly 6 feet in length.

Sierra EV vs Ford F-150 Lightning

Ford’s F-150 Lightning was the first EV truck from a mainstream, legacy automaker, and man did it make a splash. Since its debut, it has been well-reviewed but has fallen short in various categories. For instance, the electric F-150 has a towing capacity of 8,500 lbs. However, many testers have said the truck seems to struggle with that much weight. The highest range you can get out of the F-150 is 320 miles, which is a lot less than the 440 miles that the Sierra EV can achieve.

Where the Ford especially tries to compete but also fails is when you compare the hands-free driver-assistance technology, Blue Cruise, to GM Super Cruise. Super Cruise features more than 750,000 miles or road where you can drive your Sierra without needing to put your hands on the steering wheel. Blue Cruise only has about 130,000 miles of roads mapped.

Sierra EV vs Hummer EV

In a showdown against its bigger brother, the Sierra EV wins in most categories. The Sierra EV has 440 miles of range, whereas the Hummer EV has, at most, 381 miles of range in EV3x trim with the 24-module battery pack. The Hummer EV can tow up to 12,000 lbs compared to 10,000 lbs in the Sierra. The Hummer also only has a 5-foot bed when you purchase the truck variant, while the Sierra has a bed length of nearly 6 feet in normal use and 11 feet with the MidGate down and the MultiPro Tailgate’s load stop open.
