​​What is the Difference Between an Option and an Accessory?​

Have you ever been confused whether it’s an accessory or an option you want to add to your GMC? First, we should define what an option is compared to an accessory.

The word “option” refers to a feature added at the factory as part of your GMC’s build. They are already set up on the assembly line as your vehicle is being assembled. They can also be part of a package added to your vehicle, along with all the standard features. When you configure your vehicle with us or on the GMC website, you have the option to select features to complete your build. It is always a good idea to either bring a printout of your chosen specification or make notes of what you want in your next vehicle.

An “accessory” is a feature designed for your GMC that is not necessarily installed on the assembly line. Sometimes, they can be packaged separately with the vehicle and are added at the dealership. You can also order accessories to install yourself.

For example, running boards are a common feature for the Sierra 1500 and Sierra Heavy Duty models. On some trim levels, they can come as standard, especially retractable ones that fit underneath the cab. They are also available as an option from the factory. Static ones are usually available as accessories. Some can be installed on your pickup truck at the factory, while others are shipped with the vehicle to the dealership for installation. It all depends on how the vehicle is specified from the factory.

Floor mats are also an example of items available as an option or an accessory. Some standard equipment lists and packages may specify a floor mat for your vehicle. If you want a different type of floor mat or protective covering, they can be easily ordered as an accessory for your GMC.
