Ewing Buick GMC announces that the off-road-focused 2024 Sierra 1500 AT4X will have the rugged yet refined second-generation 3.0-liter inline-6 Duramax Turbo-Diesel as its standard engine. The Duramax produces 305 horsepower, with maximum torque of 495 lb-ft. and will be connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine has long been a favorite of Sierra light-duty owners,” said Will Mellon, marketing manager, GMC Sierra. “Since the launch of the refined Duramax for the 2023 model year, around 20% of all Sierra 1500s sold have come with the engine, and we expect its addition to the AT4X trim to take mix even higher.”

The 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4X with the standard Duramax will arrive at Ewing Buick GMC later this summer. Mechanical upgrades for this second-generation Duramax engine include:

  • New steel pistons with a revised combustion bowl
  • Retuned turbo compressor
  • New fuel injectors
  • Improved temperature control features

These refinements of the 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine took an already awesome engine and made it even better for off-road applications,” said John Barta, GM assistant chief engineer, Diesel Engines. “The outstanding low-end torque combined with the smooth and quiet power of this diesel engine, make it ideal for customers requiring on-road capability for things like towing, as well as off-road adventures like long-distance overlanding.”

The Sierra 1500 AT4X is the most off-road-capable model in the 1500 model line with features such as Multimatic DSSV dampers and front and rear e-locking differentials. It is only topped by the American Expedition Vehicles (AEV) Edition of the AT4X. The AEV enhancements include:

  •  An improved 32.5-degree front approach angle, a raised ground clearance to 11.2 inches, 23-degree departure, and breakover angles
  • AEV stamped steel powder-coated and e-coated front and rear bumpers. featuring heavy-duty cast recovery points and front winch capability
  • Hot-stamped Boron steel skid plates protect the front approach, steering gear, transfer case, fuel tank, and rear differential. These are more than 3.5 times stronger than equivalent cold-stamped steel skid plates
  • Bolt-on step assist Rocker Panel Protection
  • AEV race-inspired 12-spoke Salta Wheels with AEV’s signature recessed valve stems. With 33″ Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT Tires. Including full-size spare AEV wheel and tire.

There are other changes coming to the 2024 Sierra 1500 lineup including:
