How GMC Denali Changed Luxury SUVs
Since its introduction in 1998, the GMC Denali brand has brought new meaning to luxury. Telling anyone you have a Denali will immediately let them know you have the best truck or SUV money can buy. With more than two million models sold, the Denali brand is also one of the most successful luxury brands. The honeycomb grille is synonymous with a Denali and is seen as a sign of wealth and taste.

Capable and Luxurious
Starting in the mid-’90s, SUVs were becoming all the rage. GMC, like every other brand, was trying to figure out how to expand its reach to connect with customers who wanted more creature comforts as well as a larger and more capable vehicle. GMC created the first-ever Escalade for Cadillac, and from that, they decided to make their own luxury SUV, just with a different flair, the Yukon Denali. After all, 80% of Yukon buyers were already ticking every option box, according to Kevin Stein, GMC Assistant Brand Manager for Product. So GMC knew customers wanted more.
No One Made an SUV Like the GMC Yukon Denali
While every brand was trying everything when it came to new features and luxuries, GMC quickly captured the fact that customers wanted all of the utility of a pickup truck but with no compromises. They wanted the same towing abilities, a rich interior with leather and wood, supple suspension that could also be used in terrible conditions, and an exterior that looked unique.

The First GMC Denali
The first-ever Yukon Denali was delivered to customers for the 1999 model year and featured a 5.7-liter V8 that produced 255 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. It also had an automatic 4WD system that detected wheel spin and a towing capacity of 6,500 lbs when properly equipped.
Introducing The Sierra Denali
Thanks to the overnight success of the first Denali, GMC expanded the range of the brand to include the Sierra for 2002. The Sierra Denali added a special feature that would later make its way onto other GM trucks and SUVs called Quadrasteer, which used the rear wheels to turn independently for better maneuverability and added to its towing abilities. This marked one of the first vehicles ever to utilize four-wheel steering, something high-end sports cars tout these days.

More Engine, More Luxury
Once the second-generation 2001 Yukon Denali debuted, GMC gave the same treatment to the longer wheelbase Yukon XL and offered a new engine specific only to Denali models, the 6.0-liter V8 that produced 320 horsepower, which was later upped to 345 in 2003. All models featured Denali-exclusive 20-inch wheels.
The All-New Denali With An All-New Engine
When the all-new 2007 Denali models started arriving at dealers, which were still the Yukon, Yukon XL, and Sierra, they received a brand new 6.2-liter V8 with 380 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. At $9,000 less than a base model Cadillac Escalade with similar luxury and amenities, the Denali was a relative bargain compared to its main rivals and internal competition.
Introducing The GMC Terrain Denali
Finally, in 2013, for the first time ever, GMC gave the Denali treatment to the entry-level Terrain crossover, which was also the first model with a V6 engine. New buyers were happy that they, too, could have a taste of high-end luxury without spending upwards of $55,000 or more. Instead, the new Terrain Denali had a base price of just under $40,000. A couple of years later, GMC offered the Denali trim on the Acadia and then the Sierra 2500 and 3500 HD line of pickup trucks.

No One Makes Luxury Like Denali
The Denali brand has never been stronger. The 2020s have seen a whole new wave for the brand. With a complete lineup of trucks, crossovers, and SUVs, the Denali and Denali Ultimate models offer the best bang for the buck in terms of luxury, technology, and quality while still costing less than an Escalade or Range Rover. No other brand has two large electric vehicles like the Hummer EV and Sierra EV, both of which have increased capabilities over gas-powered trucks.
