​​How “Hardcore” is the 2026 GMC Canyon AT4X?​

What makes a highly capable off-road-ready pickup truck “hardcore?” Is it the frame? The suspension? The tires? Perhaps the ground clearance and protection are mounted on the frame? Among many circles, the 2026 GMC Canyon AT4X is considered a “hardcore” off-road-ready mid-size pickup truck—one with a purpose to turn every tough maneuver into an easy one.

MotorTrend recently tested a 2026 Canyon AT4X to see whether it is truly a “hardcore” off-road pickup. Not only did they confirm it, but they also called it “top-tier” and “amazing.” The editors also added that the 2026 Cayon AT4X “won’t disappoint its target audience: fans…who want to really tackle off-road obstacles from the inside of what’s a rather luxurious midsize pickup.”

It starts with a crew cab pickup truck with the standard five-and-a-half-foot bed, shared with the entire Canyon lineup. A bold grille distinguishes both the AT4 and the AT4X, giving them a commanding presence. It also stands on a three-inch suspension lift compared to other Canyon models. In all, it yielded an approach angle of 37.1 degrees, a breakover angle of 24.7 degrees, and a departure angle of 25.1 degrees. That also results in a substantial ground clearance of 10.7 inches.

A set of Multimatic DSSV dampers is added to the suspension system, providing a more compliant ride on both highway and off-highway driving. Traction is also achieved with a four-wheel-drive system featuring driver-selectable front and rear electronic locking differentials.

Power for the 2026 Canyon AT4X comes from the TurboMax 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. That is more than enough power to handle the rough country beyond the Metroplex.

Aiding your way along the trail are 10 camera views displayed on the 11.3-inch center touchscreen. These views include front and rear underbody, as well as an HD Surround Vision View. All of these views can help you navigate tight maneuvers – even to help you get into your parking spot. The same touchscreen also houses screens that display various off-road performance readouts.
