MotorAuthority Says GMC Hummer EV is “King of the Off-Road Hill”

The GMC Hummer EV takes off-road vehicles to a new level. It adds the power and futuristic technology of all-electric propulsion to make it an SUV and a pickup that no one can truly compete with, especially when you need to drive off the main roads. When paired with the 24-module battery pack, the Hummer EV can drive up to 381 miles. Even the base Hummer still has a range of 311 miles. 

Testing in Moab, Utah

Recently, MotorAuthority.com went with GMC and other journalists to Moab, Utah, to do genuine off-road testing of the Hummer EV SUV. This place truly tests a vehicle’s limits beyond what most owners will ever attempt. GMC engineered an electric SUV that shows off how brilliant electric vehicles are for customers. 

Easy To Use

When driving any vehicle, it is essential to have user interfaces for the infotainment and gauge cluster displays at your fingertips that are easy to use and not confusing or frustrating. MotorAuthority seemed to appreciate the way the Hummer EV handles things, saying, “Another pleasant reminder on the road was how all five modes, including a My Mode setting, flashed a different style of lunar graphics as sharp as PC gaming graphics into the 13.4-inch touchscreen and adjacent 12.3-inch instrument cluster. Trim Levels, Power, & Towing Ability

When buying a Hummer EV SUV or pickup, customers can choose between the EV2x dual-motor with 570 horsepower or the EV3x tri-motor trim that makes a whopping 1,000 horsepower. With the dual-motor Hummer EV, you can tow 12,000 lbs, which is more than the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T. Choosing the tri-motor Hummer drops the towing capacity to between 7,500 and 8,500 lbs, which is still a lot. That aligns it with vehicles like the Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and well above the Ford Expedition. Car and Driver tested a Hummer EV with three motors and were able to rocket to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds. 

Range

Range is a conversation with all EVs, and the Hummer ensures that owners can drive plenty before needing to plug in to charge. Dual-motor EV2x models can drive up to 311 miles on a single charge, and Tri-motor Hummer EV models can go 314 miles. EV3x models can be equipped with the 24-module battery pack, which increases the range to an estimated 381 miles. 

Relieving Range Anxiety

When taking a vehicle off-roading, you would expect it not to be exactly economical. However, MotorAuthority didn’t seem to find any issues with that in the conclusion of their testing: “Off-roading for seven hours over a 16-mile trail with an elevation change of more than 2,500 feet, and driving about 85 miles there and back, never once amounted to range anxiety. I had 124 miles of range remaining from the 295-mile start. Out here, in the middle of nowhere, the Hummer EV SUV flexed all the revolutionary EV technology that not only shrinks its width and offsets its weight, but demonstrates what the next era of off-road vehicles can aspire to. Bundle all these features together with all the other capabilities of the Hummer EV SUV and there’s truly no other vehicle from the factory like it. Its silence under extraterrestrial strain is just another bonus.”
