SELECT 2022 GMC MODELS TO BE EQUIPPED WITH SUPER CRUISE

Can a pickup truck or SUV drive itself?

Not quite yet, no matter what some people say.

But, for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500, HUMMER EV pickup truck and SUV, the Super Cruise driver assistance feature is close to doing just that. It will be the most unique feature available on one of the most popular vehicle types in the Metroplex – the full-sized half-ton pickup truck.

Super Cruise is a semi-autonomous driving feature that enables the GMC Sierra 1500 and HUMMER EV to drive itself for a brief moment on certain roads. This is made possible by precision LiDAR map data, high precision GPS, a state-of-the-art driver attention system, and a network of camera and radar sensors.

This feature also adds other pieces of driver assistance components to make it work. Automatic lane-centering is key to the Super Cruise, which enables a perfect line down the road as the sensors pick up any deviations from it.

In addition, there are some new expanded capabilities that will be added for the GMC Sierra 1500 and HUMMER EV. New capabilities include:

Trailering – Sierra 1500 and HUMMER EV drivers will be able to trailer their boat, camper and more while driving hands-free.

Automatic lane change – The technology can indicate when a lane change is optimal and initiate the maneuver, while following signaling protocols.

Enhanced navigation display – Super Cruise compatible roads will be displayed in the in-vehicle navigation systems for vehicles equipped with the embedded Google Maps app and show routes available for hands-free driving, during route selection

Super Cruise requires an active OnStar service plan with emergency services to function. That way, it can use communication signals to assist in ensuring the feature works properly based on GPS positioning. If something does go wrong, OnStar is contacted to intervene and assist the vehicle and its occupants.

This driver attention system helps to keep drivers engaged and detects when drivers need to pay more attention to the road. Even while using Super Cruise, drivers must always pay attention and not use a handheld device. This feature has been tested extensively and has already been installed on select General Motors models. This will be the first application of Super Cruise in a GMC vehicle – and in a pickup truck.
