The Basics of Towing with Your GMC​

How many of you have never towed before? We see your hands are up. Let’s talk about the basics of towing, and let’s talk about how to do it right. 

First of all, know your numbers. The sticker or plate inside the driver’s door jamb will tell you your towing capacity numbers. You need to know your numbers before you hitch your trailer. Please do not tow more than the limit; it is best to tow below those limits for better performance on the road. 

Before you hitch up the trailer, check the condition of your hitch and ball, along with the connection points, wiring, and safety chains. Inspect your trailer to make sure it’s in good shape. All items should be rust-free and devoid of cracks and wear. Make sure you’re using the right hitch and ball for the trailer you will be pulling.  

Here in Texas, we have specific laws in terms of pulling a trailer. Please make sure you know these laws, including weight restrictions and speed limits before you go. If you’re crossing a state line, make sure you know that state’s laws as well. They may differ depending on the state.  

When it is time to hitch up, make sure that you have a secure connection between your GMC and your trailer. Connect the trailer lights, wiring, and safety chains so they are properly secured between your GMC and the trailer. Test your trailer brakes to make sure they work properly. Otherwise, your GMC might not be able to stop quickly. Make sure that the trailer weight is evenly distributed. That will help to keep the trailer stable and to prevent trailer sway while on the road.  

You can now hit the road. However, there are a few things to keep in mind when you’re driving with a trailer. When you have to stop, allow for extra distance. Towing a trailer increases your overall stopping distance. When changing lanes, be extra cautious. You have extra length to work with in maneuvering the trailer along with your GMC. The increased length of your rig will not be great for parking anywhere, so find somewhere secure that can fit your GMC and your trailer. 

The mirror and camera views that appear on your infotainment touchscreen should give you extra guidance to make sure your maneuver is safe. The transmission’s Tow/Haul Mode helps maximize your transmission’s towing performance. These extra towing technologies are there to help you get through the task of towing. 

There are a few other things to consider when driving with a trailer. Please be patient and use your brakes gradually. Avoid making any sudden moves while passing or braking. It will put you at risk of an incident. If trailer sway occurs, reduce your speed and let the trailer settle. Use simple common sense when you are out on the road.
