The Buick Envista Makes Affordability Both Attainable And Desirable

At a time when the average new car price is just a hair or two under $50K, many shoppers are asking, “Is there anything that is still affordable – and if there is, would I want it?” USA Today asked the same question, finding the answer is not only yes, but happens to come from Buick. 14 years ago, Buick surprised everyone when it introduced the Encore, a subcompact SUV that carved a unique niche in the market by offering a surprising level of refinement and luxurious features within. The original Encore was a bit of an egg-shaped thing, which contributes to one of the first surprises about the Envista. By contrast, it looks low, long, and lean. It may even look too sleek to be considered an SUV, with its smooth, sloping rear roofline. Still, the front end certainly has the same sleek appearance as other Buick SUVs, with thin LED lights, nearly hidden headlights, and trapezoidal grille. Even the base Envista sports handsome 17-inch alloy wheels, chrome finish around the grille and on the trim above the side windows, so there is nothing cheap-looking about this affordable model.

That impression carries into the interior, where even the base Envista offers a digital driver display behind an attractive steering wheel and an 11-inch center touchscreen. The screen can display Apple CarPlay or Android Auto apps wirelessly, and wireless phone charging is available. Buick doesn’t overcrowd the screen, either, providing convenient physical controls for climate and other systems. There are both data and charging USB ports, and a 6-speaker audio system is also standard.   

Perhaps more surprising is that, despite this being a subcompact model, rear passengers won’t think of it that way, as they enjoy an impressive 38.7 inches of legroom. At 71.5 inches wide, you can sit three across back there, though two adults will be comfortable. Behind the rear seats is 20.7 cubic feet of cargo space, which is easily accessible through the rear hatch and expands when the rear seatbacks are lowered.  

The Envista is powered by a turbocharged 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine that produces 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of peak torque. That keeps it from the drag strip, but the torque is enough to make the Envista feel punchy around town and will get you up to freeway cruising speed without issue. In the process, it will reach 28 miles per gallon in city driving and 32 miles on the highway, according to the EPA. It will do all this with dignity, as Buick’s quiet tuning is standard on all models and features Active Noise Cancellation along with several other noise-reduction technologies.  

Another advantage of the Envista’s affordability is that you can add options or move up the model line without breaking the bank. The Preferred is the base model, with a starting MSRP of $26,495, including destination. At $27,995, the Sport Touring is one step up and mostly offers a more aggressive appearance with darkened trim, larger 18-inch wheels, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and ST embroidery on the headrests. The Avenir is the top trim and goes full-on upscale with perforated leather seats, heated front seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, Rear Park Assist, keyless entry, a power liftgate, wireless phone charging, a dark chrome grille, Pearl Nickel finish, 19-inch wheels, and other interior enhancements, while still keeping the MSRP close to the $30K mark ($31,295).
