The 2025 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition Is an Off-Road King
Truck buyers have always had plenty of options when it came to full-size trucks and their various off-road-focused trim levels and accessories. The mid-size truck buyer has not had as much focus. However, thanks to the GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition, buyers who want an off-road-focused truck without the extra size and price tag can finally have their cake and eat it, too.
A Fresh Review of the Canyon AT4X AEV Edition
In a recent review by OffRoad Xtreme, author Ben Stewart swoons over the GMC by saying how the off-road truck does everything about as perfectly as a truck can without sacrificing on-road use and capabilities.
Pricing and Trim Levels
The GMC Canyon starts at $40,995 and is available in four distinct trim levels: the base Elevation, AT4, Denali, and AT4X. The AEV Edition is an available option that includes additional accessories and features compared to the AT4X. The Elevation trim can be purchased as a 2WD truck, but all other models are only available with 4-wheel drive (4WD).
Power and Capabilities
Powering the Canyon is the 2.7-liter Turbomax engine that delivers 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, paired with a smart and quick-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission. Thanks to all that power and the advanced gearbox, the Canyon Elevation, AT4, and Denali can tow up to 7,700 lbs when properly equipped, while the off-road centric AT4X tows 6,000 lbs.
Added Features of the AEV Edition
When you option the AT4X AEV Edition, you will get the added benefit of 17-inch Salta beadlock-capable aluminum wheels with 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, an extra 1.5 inches of ground clearance over the AT4X, for a total of 12.2 inches, as well as a host of underbody panels that protect the truck from rocks and tree limbs.
The Most Magical Suspension Dampers Around
Even though the Canyon AT4X AEV Edition was engineered to make off-roading better and easier straight from the factory, the truck can still handle being used every day without making you feel like you have just come out of a boxing ring. The Multimatic DSSV dampers are designed to be the best of both worlds, with OffRoad Xtreme saying, “On the street, these dampers do an excellent job smoothing out the rough spots. On hard-edged pavement potholes, the AT4X transfers very little of the impact up to the driver. It also never feels too soft and doesn’t roll excessively in corners. Thanks in large part to the impressive DSSV dampers, this is one off-road truck that you could have fun hustling up a canyon road.”
Performance Testing by Car and Driver
In testing by Car and Driver, the magazine found the AT4X AEV Edition fantastically suited for cornering, managing a 0.72 g of lateral grip on their skidpad. That was better than the Ford Ranger Raptor, and it tied the Colorado ZR2 with smaller tires. On the road, they measured a relatively quiet 67 decibels of interior noise at 70 mph, a feat that is very difficult for any other vehicle in its class to achieve.
